Daniele De Rossi. Profile

Quick Facts:

Name: Daniele De Rossi
Nationality: Italian
Date and Place of Birth: July 24, 1983 in Rome, Italy
Position: Midfielder
Current Club: Roma (Serie A)
International Career: 2004 to present

Roma through and through, Daniele De Rossi is a fans' favorite and a vital cog in the midfield engine room.

An all-round midfielder, De Rossi can score goals, defend and dictate the tempo of a game. His distribution may not be quite on a par with the sublime passing of international team-mate Andrea Pirlo, but here is a player who is loved by Roma supporters because of his apparent destiny to be a one-club man, thus following in the footsteps of club idol Francesco Totti.

A World Cup winner with Italy, De Rossi is one of the first names on the team sheet for club and country. He symbolizes that defiance that won Italy the 2006 World Cup, and doesn't look like the archetypal Italian midfielder, all muscle, with cropped hair.

Roma Career:

After joining Roma's youth system in 2000, De Rossi made his Champions League debut against Anderlecht in October 2010 and his Serie A debut against Como in early 2003.

De Rossi helped his side finish second to AC Milan in the 2003-04 Serie A season. Indeed, the Lido di Ostia born star has been a serial runner-up with the club, as Roma also finished second in 2006, 2007 and 2008. They have been the victims of Inter Milan's dominance in the noughties, but De Rossi helped them achieve Coppa Italia success in 2007 and 2008, beating Inter both times.
Fair Means and Foul:

De Rossi's career has not been without incident. His reputation was enhanced in a league match against Messina on March 19, 2005. De Rossi scored for Roma, but replays clearly showed he had used his hand to force the ball over the line. He then told referee Mauro Bergonzi that he had scored illegally and the goal was disallowed. The official praised him for his honesty after the game.

In 2006, a 22-year-old De Rossi was given a straight red card in Italy's 2006 World Cup clash with the USA. His blatant elbow on Brian McBride earned him a four-match ban, and is one of the tournament’s more unsavory memories. He did not reappear until the final when he replaced Totti and helped the Azzurri beat France on penalties.

His class showed through, though, as he approached McBride after the match and apologized for his actions. Such a move attracted praise from McBride and spared him more severe criticism in the world media.
International Career:

De Rossi performed well for the Italian under-21s, winning the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He also collected a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics in the same year.

He scored on his debut at senior level in a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Norway when he was 21. Owing to that red card against the USA, he played little part in the World Cup victory, but scored a penalty in the final as the Azzurri triumphed against France on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw.

De Rossi has captained Italy and is seen by many as the eventual successor to Fabio Cannavaro.

Mai 2010 in den endgültigen WM-Kader Ghanas berufen. Am 5. Juni 2010 bestritt er für Ghana gegen Lettland sein erstes Länderspiel.

Andres Iniesta.Profile

Quick Facts:
Name: Andres Iniesta
Nationality: Spanish
Date and Place of Birth: May 11, 1984 in Fuentealbilla, Spain
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Current Club: Barcelona (La Liga)
Previous Clubs: None
International Career: 2006 to present

his eye-of-the-needle passing. For regulars, it is par for the course.

Iniesta dovetails beautifully with teammate Xavi Hernandez. Both products of Barca’s La Masia youth academy, the duo were pillars of Spain’s 2010 World Cup and double European Championship triumph, and have won three Champions Leagues with the Catalan giants.

The midfielder is as humble as they come: “My personal objectives are collective objectives. Individual prizes are not important.”

It is such collective spirit that has propelled Barca to multiple trophies, with that six-trophy haul in 2009 considered the Zenith for Iniesta and co.

The Early Years:

After showing his promise as a child, Iniesta initially wanted to join Barca’s hated rivals Real Madrid, but his parents were unconvinced that the Spanish capital was a safe environment for their son, and he joined Barca’s academy at the age of 12.

After being invited to train for the first team one day when he was 16, Josep Guardiola, now coach of the Catalans, told his teammate Xavi: "You're going to retire me, but this kid's going to retire us all".

After progressing through the club’s various youth teams, Iniesta made his senior debut under Louis van Gaal in 2002. However, with so much talent in the ranks, he was used in a variety of different positions.

Champions League Treble:

To date Iniesta has won five league titles with Barcelona. He was left out of the starting line-up as Barca won the Champions League against Arsenal in 2006, but was introduced as a half-time substitute. He only made 15 starts in the domestic league that season.

However, Iniesta buckled down and became a regular in the following season, and is now one of the first names on the team-sheet.

One of Iniesta’s finest moments in a Barca shirt was his last minute goal to send Barca through to the 2009 Champions League final at the expense of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He unloaded from the edge of the area and watched his shot swerve into the top right hand corner. That season he would play 90 minutes of the final as Barca beat Manchester United 2-0 in Rome.

Two years later he was again integral as Barca defeated the Red Devils 3-1 in the final at Wembley.

International Career:

As a youngster, Iniesta helped Spain win the UEFA European Under-16 and Under-19 Championships.

Iniesta was a surprise selection for the 2006 World Cup in Spain, but it was at the 2010 edition where he would truly make an impact. The playmaker registered against Chile in the group stages as he produced a man-of-the-match display, but it was in the final against the Netherlands where he made his biggest impact, scoring the extra-time winner as Spain won their first ever World Cup.

Two years earlier he formed part of a magnificent midfield that was the driving force behind the country’s European Championship triumph.

Iniesta was named Player of the Tournament as Spain retained the trophy four years later.
